Thayer Coggin Sustainability and Green Initiative

For over 70 years, Thayer Coggin has been a leader in modern design furniture manufacturing.  We pride ourselves on using the best raw materials in creating true bench-made furniture at our factory in High Point, NC.  We also recognize the
importance of being a leader in producing furniture of not only the highest quality but also doing so in a manner that supports the environment to the best of our ability.  Our sustainability efforts can be seen in our careful selection of suppliers, our practices
throughout the factory, and the level to which we build or “overbuild” our furniture.

The biggest input for a majority of our furniture is wood.  Whether it be solid maple hardwood, steam bent hardwood plywood, or solid walnut frames used to create our iconic designs, our suppliers are SFI certified or industry equivalent.   The Sustainable
Forestry Initiative (SFI) aims to protect and create sustainable forestry practices while operating under principles that ensure the safety of wildlife habitat and soil and water conservation.  It is the world’s largest single certification standard by area.

The foam components used in our upholstered pieces pass the Cal. 117 2013 burn requirements. We purchase from foam suppliers that are CertiPUR certified and use urethane foams that have the maximum amount of polyols, which are derived from
soy, reducing the percentage of petroleum based raw material in our products.  Our down and feather fillings are all-natural and provide the utmost in environmentally friendly sustainability.

We are continuously improving our facilities and our efforts to do everything we can with our environmental goals in mind.  We have recently installed a new energy efficient HVAC system in our 200,000 sq. ft manufacturing facility, use LED lighting,
recycle scrap material inputs-everything from leather to cardboard to fiber, and encourage our employees to recycle.

Throughout all of our efforts to create a product that is as environmentally friendly as possible, none is more telling and lasting than our commitment to quality and manufacturing in the USA.  A Thayer Coggin piece is not only a work of art, but one built to the highest standards of furniture manufacturing. Our products are built to last and can be passed down through generations adding a different layer of sustainability than cannot be found with most furniture companies.  A true testament of this is the vintage market that is full of our product in great condition usually selling for prices high above retail. This means that a single piece of our furniture has a lifespan vastly outlasting those of a lesser quality. Almost half the weight of wood in a piece of furniture is carbon and reducing the unnecessary reproduction of furniture by buying a high quality piece adds up to a substantial amount of CO2.  Furthermore, all of our products are made in High Point, NC, allowing us to constantly monitor everything happening at our factory. Building furniture in a factory located in the U.S. means that unlike many of our competitors who have facilities overseas, our carbon footprint is reduced by not shipping our finished product on containers across the ocean or manufacturing in areas of the world that have much lower environmental standards and pay little attention to impact their practices have on those around them.
